Pastor Ken Baumgarten

A Biography: Pastor Ken Baumgarten

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . . No, wait. That's the wrong story. O.K., I admit it. I'm not real comfortable writing an autobiographical sketch, so I'll give you the "Reader's Digest" version and if you want to know more, or something specific, I'm going to trust that you'll ask me. Do we have a deal? All right then, let's get this over with.

I was born in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of my parents who wanted a house full of kids but had to settle on me. I lived my first 10 years as a denizen of the mean streets of Metropolis before moving to an extremely rural part of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
There were more cows and deer than people and there I learned my life-long love of hunting and fishing. I lived there until joining the Army at 17 and beginning a stint as a wanderer, covering significant parts of 2 continents. Life eventually led me to Boston, where I met the delightful Tracey Palumbo, who in a grand display of poor judgment and foolhardiness, became my girlfriend and later, my wife of low these 13 years. Together we have 2 young sons, Justin and Giovanni. I also have an amazing adult daughter, Ashley, from my younger and wilder days. I was raised in a marginal Catholic family (weddings and funerals were church occasions), and as a veteran of Catholic School, had become an agnostic or atheist, or whatever a 10 year old who doesn't want to go to church becomes. By the age of 11 or 12, I was actively drinking and drugging, a pattern that persisted for 11 years. After years of trying to manage and /or conquer my addictions and the whirlwind of stuff that comes with them, I finally called out to God for rescue in 1990. He broke the chains of addiction in my life, started transforming me into a more decent human being, and in what I think may have been His only bad choice to date, called me to a life of full time ministry. After a period of resistance, I went to Pastor School, obtained a Theology degree, and spent 7 years as a pastor of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Boston, Maine, and New Hampshire. I had always felt a bit stifled in the context of that denominational structure, so in 2002, at the behest of a bunch of wild and crazy friends who shared a passion for telling people the great news of God's love for them, I became the founding pastor of Compass Point Community Church. Of all the places I've lived, (12 states and 2 countries), there's no place that's more of a home to me than right here and I hope to live out my days and my ministry with my Compass Point family.

If there's anything else you want to know, give me a call or ask me at church. I really don't mind talking. My dad named his boat after me. The Breezy. He said it was nicer than the Wind Bag.

Grace and peace to you, Ken
